Thermopylae

£0.50

1872 – During the Great Tea Race of 1872, after departing the Shanghai River on June 18, Thermopylae and Cutty Sark passed and re-passed each other on the run up to and across the Indian Ocean, until the Cutty Sark lost her rudder in a gale. The Thermopylae raced home to win. Cutty Sark returned 7 days later after making and fitting a new rudder at sea in stormy conditions.
